Neighborly began in 2013 with a simple yet profound realization by Jennifer Maldonado, a single mother living in the San Carlos neighborhood of San Diego, California. Jennifer recognized that despite living so close to others, she barely knew her neighbors—perhaps only their dog’s name, but not the owners’. This realization struck a chord deep within her when she considered the safety of her son in emergencies common to the area, like fires or earthquakes. Although she trusted that a neighbor might come to his rescue, she had no way to reach them—no names, no numbers, no connection.

Determined to change this, Jennifer took a courageous step; she reached out to her neighbors and hosted a potluck breakfast in their cul-de-sac. She sent heartfelt invitations, opening her home and heart to an eclectic mix of people. What began as a simple meet and greet blossomed into genuine friendships. Neighbors became family—sharing joys and challenges, weaving stories, and creating lasting memories together.

From this genuine desire to belong, a powerful community emerged. In a world where friendships often form at work, school, or sports fields, Jennifer’s neighborhood rediscovered the beauty of connection where it matters most—right where we live. Families grew, children thrived in a nurturing village, and bonds deepened beyond casual acquaintance. Strangers became allies, supporting each other with job leads, recommendations, and shared resources—always freely given, without expectation, embodying the true spirit of being “Neighborly.”

Inspired by this transformation, the Neighborly Giving Foundation was born—to extend the gift of community beyond San Carlos, offering resources and support to neighborhoods across the globe.
