Neighborly began in 2013 with a simple yet profound realization by Jennifer Maldonado, a single mother living in the San Carlos neighborhood of San Diego, California. Jennifer recognized that despite living so close to others, she barely knew her neighbors, perhaps only their dog’s name, but not the owners’. This realization struck a chord deep within her when she considered the safety of her son in emergencies common to the area, like fires or earthquakes. Although she trusted that a neighbor might come to his rescue, she had no way to reach them. No names. No numbers. No connection.

Recognizing this was the same need and longing for many in her community, she began to gather them for meet and greets. Together they would give back to the community hosting children’s events, crafting nights, potlucks, clothing drives, and even started a feeding program for the homeless. They found that no matter the age, every person craved community and had needs the could be met by giving to one another. 

From this genuine desire to belong, a powerful community emerged. In a world where friendships often form at work, school, or sports fields, Jennifer’s neighborhood rediscovered the beauty of connection where it matters most, right where we live.
